Strathman: ‘We will not go quietly into the night’

Well, the unthinkable finally happened. A backflip in Allen Fieldhouse indicated a 33-game home winning streak was over. Two different courts stormed by ravenous students. Those brief highlights summarized the type of week the Kansas Jayhawks have experienced. Team meetings behind closed doors and a late-game defensive switch in Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma couldn’t prevent […]

Strathman: Will the ‘real’ Elijah Johnson please stand up?

There’s only so much magic a team can use to save itself late in a game. With the Jayhawks down eight points at the 54-second mark, freshman guard Andrew White III ripped off his warm ups to replace senior guard Elijah Johnson. A vocal Johnson sat on the bench and watched White score six points […]

Strathman: The Kansas basketball therapy hotline, we are now taking calls

Another game brought another victory for the Kansas men’s basketball team. But this time, the number two team in the nation looked far from their best as the Jayhawks escaped Morgantown, W. Va. with a 61-56 victory. Shortly after the conclusion of the game, The University Daily Kansan newsroom received a phone call. At 10:40 […]

Late-game defense sparks Kansas in 69-62 victory

Down by four points with 6:53 left in the game, Kansas seemed to be in a daze. The Temple Owls rallied from a double-digit deficit, secured momentum and were in position to snap Kansas’ 63-game non-conference winning streak at home. At least that was the case until redshirt freshman guard Ben McLemore jumped the passing lane, intercepted […]

Strathman: Texas A&M freshman quarterback could be Heisman contender

Texas A&M freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel has captured the spotlight in the college football world. Manziel continued his dominance after a 59-29 victory over Missouri, throwing for 372 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more. “Johnny Football” helped the Aggies clinch their first 10-win season in 14 years, despite the move from the […]

Strathman: Seniors deserve recognition for battling

Four years ago, the Kansas football seniors arrived on campus. The players immediately bonded as bewildered freshmen and built a brotherhood with teammates. They watched the seniors at that time play their last football game at Memorial Stadium. On Saturday, those same players walked onto the field and played their last home football game. Despite […]

Strathman: Kansas struggles offensively against SE Missouri State

The men’s basketball season has officially begun. Kansas battled Southeast Missouri State and won 74-55, but the victory was no easy feat. The Jayhawk offense didn’t seem to be clicking. When the offense lagged, Southeast Missouri State continued to battle, getting within six points in the second half. Despite the lack of offense, one thing […]

Strathman: All not lost for football

Football magic filled the air in Memorial Stadium Saturday as excited fans readied themselves for a Homecoming battle between Kansas and Texas. For 58 minutes, that same magic fueled the Kansas crowd’s hope for a victory, with the Jayhawks up by three points with two minutes left. But with 12 seconds left on the clock, […]

Strathman: K-State primed for BCS national championship appearance after West Virginia

For the past six seasons, the Southeastern Conference has dominated the BCS championship, winning six-straight titles. It has been two seasons since a team represented the Big 12 conference. The last non-SEC team to win the BCS championship was Texas before the six-straight SEC victories. However, that could all change with the newest edition of […]

Strathman: Out with the old, in with the new

For a moment, the Kansas football team looked like it had some magic. The team stormed back from a 20-point deficit and cut Oklahoma State’s lead down to six. Sadly, a roughing the kicker penalty caused the game to be over, and Kansas lost 20-14. But, hope is not lost. With the offense hardly posing […]

Strathman: West Virginia can take Big 12 title

The Big 12 conference was once known for its power running and hard-nosed defense. Now, many teams spread the football field and sling the ball through the air. And for the undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers, that gives them an edge over the rest of the Big 12. After four games, West Virginia leads the nation […]

Strathman: Crist has yet to live up to expectations

When football coach Charlie Weis declared that senior quarterback Dayne Crist would play for the football team, many thought Crist would be the second-coming of former quarterback Todd Reesing. Some thought that he would be the missing piece to the team. Only problem is that the piece is still missing. After four games, the former […]

Strathman: Turnovers in TCU game shows football program’s improvement

When coach Charlie Weis came to the University, the obvious goal was to change the losing ways of the football program. Though all new coaches aim for that same goal, most, including Weis, know changing a program takes more than a swing of a magic wand. Realistically, the main goal is to just compete. For […]

Strathman: Jayhawks’ weak fourth quarter results in loss

Every aspect of a football game matters. The start decides how the teams will do. If a team does well in the first few possessions, odds are that momentum will carry into the second and third quarters. The first possession after halftime sets the tone for the second half. When the offense starts with an […]

Strathman: Impact players look to lead Jayhawks

The start of the Charlie Weis era was anything but perfect. Senior quarterback Dayne Crist looked rusty, only completing 17 of his 36 passing attempts, throwing for 169 yards and only one touchdown. Even though the defense forced five turnovers, the Kansas defense also allowed 411 total yards, including a 99 yard run that gave […]
