Police search for missing former student

Police are still searching for Yelekal Alemu, a 23-year-old former University student, after he was reported missing Saturday.

Alemu was last seen early Saturday morning, and police found his vehicle later that day in a rural area of Douglas County, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department.

Family members told police that Alemu has failed to show up for important family gatherings, and that is is unusual for him to be out of contact for this long. They have distributed flyers in Lawrence in an effort to locate Alemu, while police search the area where his vehicle was found, about four miles east of the city.

Alemu, who also goes by the nickname “Kal,” was last enrolled at the University in the fall semester of 2011, according to Jill Jess, a University spokeswoman.

Police ask anyone with information about Alemu’s whereabouts to call the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509. Calls can also be made anonymously to the Douglas County Tip Hotline at 785-843-8477. Rewards for may be provided for information.
